Odd Future - Oldie
I got OFWGKTA’s long awaited collaboration album a couple days ago and listened to it a few times during my flight home. I immediately realized that The OF Tape Vol. 2 does not live up to the hype and what I was expecting from it. It’s a good collection of songs, but not amazing by any means. I also found it humerous that Hodgy was featured on so many of the songs that the album could’ve been appropriately called Hodgy and Friends.
I already realized Rella was going to be a standout song, but I wasn’t expecting to come across this outstanding 10 minute 36 second epic. It’s pretty damn solid, and I was extremely happy when Earl started flowing over the relaxed instrumental, since Tyler originally said he wasn’t going to be on the album. I’m pretty sure Tyler purposely said that so all of Earl’s fans would find this song almost like a surprise gift. Earl’s lyrics are outstanding! I also like that Frank Ocean rapped, and he has a pretty tight flow.
However, I do feel the song could have definitely been better since it is limited by it’s repetitive feel. The beat is amazing, but every beat gets old after listening to it for over 10 minutes. I would have really liked to see the beat change up off and on to keep the song from sounding monotonous, or even an individual beat for each member. Regardless though, this is one of the best songs yet to come from Odd Future, and easily one of the best songs I know over 10 minutes.
